Since the poem is the first in the volume, I also threw in the fascinating front-matter to Wheatley's volume: the "Mezzo-Tint," the Dedication, the Preface, John Wheatley's letter, and the affadavit that was deemed necessary. If you have time to look at any of that stuff, it offers interesting insights into the stakes in play for Wheatley's readers. They key thing we'll be discussing, though, is the poem itself--so go ahead and skip straight to it if you're short on time.
It's a difficult poem to parse, and there's little critical agreement on precisely what Wheatley is saying. What do you think?
